The Fort Smith Adult Education

Classes

Basic Skills

Classes to help adults improve their basic skills in reading and math are available during the day and evening hours, Monday through Thursday. All classes are free of charge and are designed to meet the individual needs of those who are seeking to improve their math or reading skills. Placement tests are used to determine the most appropriate level of instruction for each adult learner. All work is individualized and the students are able to work at their own pace, in a comfortable and non-threatening atmosphere.
Computer-assisted instruction is also available under the guidance of certified adult education instructors. User-friendly computer programs provide additional practice and supplemental support for our adult students.
The counselor assists each student in determining an appropriate plan of instruction, based upon the scores from the initial assessment, as well as the personal goals and objectives of the individual.

GED Program

The GED Program is designed for adults who have not previously received a high school diploma. We offer on-site, free GED testing for these students. Because Arkansas is the only state that does not currently charge for GED testing, all GED candidates must provide a current Arkansas photo ID to validate their residency. The Arkansas High School Diploma is awarded to students upon successful completion of the five-part exam (Writing, Science, Reading, Math and Social Studies).
A policy of open-entry, open-exit is permitted in the GED program. This simply means students are able to enroll at anytime or leave at anytime. Classes are offered during the daytime and evening hours throughout the year for those who need to brush up on basic skills before taking the tests. If an applicant's initial assessment indicates reading and math skills on a high school level, the Official GED Practice Test is then administered. Upon successful completion of all five Practice Tests, the counselor will schedule the student to take the Official GED exam. Graduation is held at the end of each school year, with over 300 students graduating annually.

Spanish

This class is provided for a nominal fee to cover the textbook, audio tapes, and classroom instruction. The class meets two days per week, two hours per class, for five weeks.
The class emphasizes conversational Spanish skills. The instructor is willing to customize the class according to the needs of the individual participants. For example, if the students need industrial vocabulary, the instructor will develop a curriculum to address industrial vocabulary needs. See "Schedules" for current schedule and application.

Computer

The business and computer classes at the Adult Education Center are designed with the adult learner in mind. All classes are taught using a hands-on approach. Each class is designed to be enjoyable and stress free. The MS Office courses are $80 and include a USB Flash drive, textbook, and class instruction. Our FREE classes include Microsoft IT certification, Digital Literacy, Social Networking, Google Apps for Teachers, and Technology for Career Success. See "Schedules" for class descriptions, schedules, and applications.

English as a Second Language (ESL)

Classes in English as a Second Language are designed for persons over the age of 18 whose native language is not English. Beginning, intermediate, and advanced coursework, as well as U.S. citizenship preparation is provided. Placement tests are used to determine the appropriate level of instruction for each student.
The ESL classes emphasize survival English in the American society, particularly in the workplace. Computer-assisted instruction is also available for additional practice and review. All staff are certified and experienced teachers of ESL.
Classes are available Monday through Thursday, day and evening, with open entry/open exit. There is no charge for classes, but books must be purchased. Only a picture ID is required to enroll in classes.
Our multicultural classes include students from countries all over the world. Informal class instruction allows students to focus on listening, speaking, reading and writing in English in a relaxed and non-threatening environment. Students have the opportunity to make new friends while studying English.
