Learn English as a Second Language

The English as a Second Language courses are designed to teach English language and civics skills to foreign born non-native English speakers. English as a Second Language ( ESL) courses range from providing basic language and life skills for complete beginners to helping advanced students refine their English in preparation for higher education, vocational training, or a career. Reading, writing, listening, speaking, and grammar are included at all levels of instruction. Supplemental ESL classes are available in areas such as conversation, writing, and career development.
  • Through ESL courses students are better prepared to live, work and study in this country. Courses are offered at the beginning, intermediate and advanced levels and civics.
  • Citizenship courses are offered to prepare students for the U.S. Citizenship and Naturalization Examination.
  • English as a Second Language courses are for Illinois residents for whom English is not their native language.  International students and visitors are not eligible for ESL or other adult education courses.
