Language Learners of New Jersey


The objective of this directory is to help immigrants to the United States find English as a
Second Language programs in their area that are best suited to their needs. Originally created
as a collaborative project between the NJ Departments of Community Affairs and Education,
it is annually revised by the NJDOE. The resources in the directory are current as of June
2011, but be aware that programs are constantly changing. The listings are grouped
alphabetically by county. The directory also contains a listing of Internet ESL resources,

resources for businesses that wish to provide their employees with ESL training, and an index
of the listings in the back.

If you are eligible for unemployment benefits or welfare, you are eligible to receive free
ESL classes from Workforce Advantage, a government agency that deals with
employment. You must get a reference from the unemployment of welfare office before
signing up for classes. They have locations throughout the state.

Atlantic Cape Community College offers several different types of ESL classes. The first,
Adult Education ESL for survival, is free and designed for people who are new to the
U.S. and know very little English. The second level is a non-credit course, which is
offered at a small fee and is designed for non-native speakers who have been in the
country for some time but still want to improve their English. The last level is a credit
course, which is meant for people seeking a college degree and offered at regular college

Volunteer tutors work one-to-one with adult Bergenfield residents who wish to learn the
English language. In addition to one-to-one tutoring, tutors volunteer their time at the
Conversation Group sessions held in the library for students who have registered in the
program. Conversation hours occur on Mondays from 1:30-2:30 and Thursdays from

Designed for people with beginner-advanced level English skills who are interested in
improving their English conversation, pronunciation, grammar, writing, reading, and
critical thinking skills. GED classes through this program are offered in both English and
Spanish. They are intended for adults who have not graduated high school and would
like to improve their basic skills or earn a high school diploma. Classes focus on writing,
social studies, science, literature and mathematics.

Classes are offered Monday to Friday at flexible hours. Mercer Street Friends offers free
basic skills through GED classes to people over 16. Classes involve one-on-one and
small group instruction. They are designed for students with some English fluency and
literacywho are looking to transition from ESL to working towards a GED and higher

Adults with limited or no command of the English language will learn and/orimprove
their English language communication skills. Instruction is offered in pronunciation,
speaking, listening, reading, writing, American culture, community living skills, and
workforce readiness skills. Students will be assigned to classes based on interview and
test results. Classes are also offered for foreign-born adults who are seeking citizenship.
As well as ESL training, instruction is also offered in American history, civics and
American culture. These services are provided free of charge, except for the one-time
registration fee. Students unable to pay the fee should see the Administrator for a waiver.

as a Second Language classes, citizenship interview preparation classes, and tutoring.

The goals of this adult ESL program are: to provide English language instruction, to help
adults gain motivational skills and knowledge to pursue further education and training,

their English language skills through an integrated literacy curriculum and the use of
"real-life materials." To join the ESL Conversation Group, please complete a registration
form and return it to the library. Students must be over the age of 18 and be able to speak
some English.
