Adult Literacy

Literacy is an essential skill in today’s society. The goal of LCA’s Adult Literacy program is to provide help for those learners wishing to become literate in the English language. We even offer a computer literacy class.  We provide a variety of settings to meet this goal including small classes, one to one tutoring, and lab times. During any year we work with over 200 adults in the Fairbanks area.  Whether you are part of our program or wish to be, we welcome you to explore the student and tutor pages for more information about us.

Classes
Classes for ESL are scheduled in 8 week blocks.  We have an open entry policyfor these classes, so  learners can start at any time.  Additional classes in citizenship, American culture, and beginning use of computers are also offered.

LCA is here to provide English classes, a Citizenship class, and one-on-one tutoring to those looking to improve their English skills.  We also offer tutors to people working towards their GED, but we do not offer GED testing. If you would like to become one of our students, you just have to follow a few simple steps:
  • Make an appointment to meet with a staff person. This intake appointment takes about 2 hours.
During this appointment you will
-Learn abour the services from the Literacy Council
-Fill out the intake paper work
-Take a speaking fluency placement test
-Take a reading and writing placement test
  • Register for classes and/or sign up for tutoring, and
  • Re-test later to see how you are progressing.

Call 907-456-6212 or stop into the Literacy Council at 517 Gaffney Road in Fairbanks to get started!

School Age
LCA's School Age Tutoring Program trains adult volunteer tutors in learning styles and supports them throughout a six week commitment to individual students.  Tutors work with students one-on-one to increase proficiency in areas identified by teachers, as well as to help students increase "school" skills such as staying on task, social skill development, and completion of homework. Based on our community needs, we will also provide short workshops on resume writing and college admissions essay exams. Tutoring is a great way to get some experience, build your resume and positively change the future. We are looking for people who are motivated, who like to work with children. If you are interested in tutoring in the School Age Program call Cherie at 907-456-6212.

Do you have an elementary student who could use some tutoring during the summer? Or are you a middle school or high school student who would like to do something productive with your summer? Call 907-456-6212 to find out when the sessions start.

Basic and intermediate computer classes are available. Preschool is not available during these classes. Check out our current class schedule or call 907-456-6212.
